Another New Job Today
Today Jimmy started his first job!

Jimmy is working at the country club snack bar in a dual role as an expediter and Point of Sale person. In layman's terms... he gets the food from the cook (the guy on the grill) and rings people up.

He's pretty excited and he gets some nice benefits too. First, he gets all the free food and drink he wants. Second, he gets a free membership to the pool at the country club (it'll be interesting to see if I get a refund since I already paid for his membership). Third, he gets to bring up to 2 guests in with him to swim for only $1 each.

We had to do the working papers thing because he's under 18. I forgot what a pain in the ass that is. We also braced him for the let down of his first check or two. See, the township takes a $52 Occupational Privilege Tax out of your first check in addition to Federal, State, Social Security, and Medicare. If they can't get it all from the first check, they get the balance from your second check.

Typical government bullshit... always reaching into your pockets for more money. When I was his age, the tax was $10 from your first check. Damn, that a 520% increase in taxes!!!

Anyway, it's pretty funny... working at the country club. All I can think of is Caddy Shack and the doody. Speaking of Caddy Shack, I leave you with this...

The New Job @ GSI Commerce
Wow, did this day start off bad.

I was supposed to be in the office for orientation at 9:00 so I left at 8:10. That would give me a 25 minute buffer for traffic. I didn't get in the office until 9:45!!! Some asshole on the Blue Route decided to spill 100 gallons of white paint on the road between the Route 3 and Route 30 exits.

Traffic was backed up all the way down to I95. My alternates of 320 & 252 were backed up. My alternates to the alternates were backed up. What a damn mess!

Fortunately, I wasn't the only new hire stuck in that mess so orientation was changed to start at 10:00.

So now I'm a full time employee of GSI Commerce Solutions Inc. and I'm like a pig in shit. I'm working in the IT department with like computer folk. I'm identifying problems and proposing solutions. I come in whenever, eat lunch when I'm hungry, and leave when I want (provided the work gets done of course). This is how a company is supposed to be folks!

The only sucky thing is that my benefits don't start for 60 days. That means go with out healthcare insurance or pay for COBRA. With a family depending on me, the former is not an option. However, COBRA is over $1000 a month so what kind of option is that?

Fortunately, there is a third option... STM or Short Term Medical. Basically this is major medical coverage for any number of days between 30 and 365. While it won't cover routine office visits or prescriptions, it will cover us if something serious happens. I purchased 62 days of insurance (can't forget the weekend between your end date and start date) for only $700. Not bad considering the other 2 choices.

Anyway, if you're interested in STM, check out this web site:

$249... Am I Crazy?
Well I've joined the ranks of crazy people (my brother included) that have spent way too much for a pair of sunglasses.

While down the shore, I purchased a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses. These sunglasses really are the Cadillac of sunglasses... polarized, anti-reflective, anti-glare, optically correct, hi-impact polycarbonate, you name it. All I was looking for was a pair of RayBans.

I pointed out to Michele that during the summer my contacts make me very photo-sensitive. She knew a $10 pair of Foster Grants wouldn't be a good idea. She didn't seem to have a problem with the $99 RayBans either. Made by Bausch & Lomb, they were polarized and made of good quality optical glass. However, the styles available made me look like a total dork.

The sales guy obviously showed me his top of the line sunglasses. They were an aviator style and didn't make me look like a dork. They didn't make me look like Maverick or Ice Man either but hey, you have to take the good with the bad.

Anyway, I discussed it with Michele and I justified the cost by spreading it out over 5+ years (that's how long I get from my sunglasses). At $50 a year, I figured it's a good buy.

So, my question to you dear readers... am I crazy for spending $249 on a pair of sunglasses? Leave a comment and let me know.

The Boys Are Definitely Growing Up
So we're down the shore and the boys are talking to Michele (whose back is to the boardwalk). A few feet away in a lounge chair is some guy waiting for his wife.

As the kids are talking, they start to talk slower and then go silent. The guy in the lounge chair sits up and spins around towards the boardwalk also in dead silence.

Michele says, "Guys, what's the matter?" as she turns towards the boardwalk.

Running up the ramp of the boardwalk is a VERY buxom brunette in a green bikini. She's bouncing to the point where she'll give herself a black eye if she's not careful.

Michele turns around to look at the boys whose mouths are now wide open... "Typical men," she says.

The guy in the lounge chair starts to laugh. My boys are definitely growing up.

Goodbye MBNA / Bank of America... Hello GSI Commerce
I'm sitting at my desk here at the bank typing up this blog entry because today is my last day.

I cut a 6 month contract short to take a full-time position. While my boss was not thrilled, I at least hope she understands my decision... look for work when my contract expires in October or take the gig sitting on the plate now.

And what a gig it is! I'll be working for GSI Commerce in King of Prussia, PA as a Sr. Performance Analyst. As I stated before, it's full time, not a contract. It's casual/casual (jeans & t-shirt), I get 4 weeks of vacation per year, and I'm making a shitload of money!!! I mean really, a shitload of money. bigGrin

So who/what is GSI Commerce?

GSI Commerce is a web hosting company. If you've ever been to the web site for Dick's Sporting Goods, Radio Shack, Toys R Us, Zales, etc. You've been to a web site created and hosted by the good folks at GSI Commerce. In simplest terms, is a competitor of GSI Commerce.

Now that you know about GSI Commerce you're saying, "Dave, what the hell is a Sr. Performance Analyst?" That's easy. When you're surfing this Christmas season and you're saying, "Damn this sight is slow," I'll be the one that gets called to find out why. Once that's done, it's my job to create and execute a plan of attack to fix the performance issue.

Those of you that know me, know I'm a problem solver. Present me with a problem and I'll provide you with a solution... usually not what you expected but something totally out of the box.

So tell me folks, does this seem like the perfect gig for me?
