Wow, did this day start off bad.
I was supposed to be in the office for orientation at 9:00 so I left at 8:10. That would give me a 25 minute buffer for traffic. I didn't get in the office until 9:45!!! Some asshole on the Blue Route decided to spill 100 gallons of white paint on the road between the Route 3 and Route 30 exits.
Traffic was backed up all the way down to I95. My alternates of 320 & 252 were backed up. My alternates to the alternates were backed up. What a damn mess!
Fortunately, I wasn't the only new hire stuck in that mess so orientation was changed to start at 10:00.
So now I'm a full time employee of GSI Commerce Solutions Inc. and I'm like a pig in shit. I'm working in the IT department with like computer folk. I'm identifying problems and proposing solutions. I come in whenever, eat lunch when I'm hungry, and leave when I want (provided the work gets done of course). This is how a company is supposed to be folks!
The only sucky thing is that my benefits don't start for 60 days. That means go with out healthcare insurance or pay for COBRA. With a family depending on me, the former is not an option. However, COBRA is over $1000 a month so what kind of option is that?
Fortunately, there is a third option... STM or Short Term Medical. Basically this is major medical coverage for any number of days between 30 and 365. While it won't cover routine office visits or prescriptions, it will cover us if something serious happens. I purchased 62 days of insurance (can't forget the weekend between your end date and start date) for only $700. Not bad considering the other 2 choices.
