| It's Finally Over |
The 4th season of American Idol is finally over... Carrie Underwood, the country chick, won. God I hate country music, it sucks so bad that it actually makes me sleepy.
Anyway, is it just me or did they really need a 2 hour season finale? Blah blah blah. I don't need a recap of all the losers, I already saw them the first time around. I sure as hell don't need to see prior season losers either... William Hung anyone? Hey, Simon Fuller, do me a favor next year... keep the season finale to an hour!
Hmmm... what else is happening? Yesterday I was in a meeting with 8 others where we spent almost an hour reviewing a Power Point presentation. We discussed the order of the bullet points and debated over whether we should be using hyphens instead of slashes to separate words. I don't know about anyone else in that meeting but I have a growing to-do list of programs to write and reports to generate... I don't care whether we use hyphens or slashes!
I've been asked to mentor an intern that started last week. He seems pretty cool, we have quite a bit in common. The weird thing here is that I've only been with this new company for a little over 2 months and he's been with the company for 7 years. How do I mentor him? Also, why is a 7 year veteran considered an intern? Too strange if you ask me.
Either way, I'll do my best. Andy is the third person I've had the opportunity to mentor. I enjoy doing it and I think I've been doing pretty good job. Quang? Bill?
Oh well, it's getting late and I'm beat. More interesting thoughts to come as the spirit moves me. |

| Max Is Getting Better or Money Well Spent |
Everyone has been asking when am I going to update my BLOG? Well, I don't really have anything interesting to share right now. But if you want an update, here we go...
Max (my dog) is starting to get better. You see, Max has allergies just like you and me. When he starts chewing on his paws and his ass, we give him 2 Benedryl twice daily and he's fine. Not so this time .
See this time, in addition to allergies, Max had blocked anal sacs. What the hell is an anal sac you ask? Well here it is... MORE THAN YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT ANAL SACS. So we take Max to the vet for a sick visit. She (the vet) tells us what's wrong with Max and asks if we want to drain the anal sacs or if they should. Did you read the page I linked to above and run the Shockwave demo? Needless to say we said, "No thanks, you do it!" So the vet leaves the exam room with Max.
When the vet comes back with Max, his ass is completely shaved and after laying down on the floor, he doesn't want to get up. When he does get up to leave the exam room with us, his ass is puckered up like the mouth of a kid that's just sucked on a lemon . Poor Max, any guy that's been to a urologist, knows what he was feeling like at that moment.
Anyway, after the draining and initial embarrassment, Max is doing fine. As for the trip to the vet, that was money well spent in my opinion ! |

| My Meeting From Hell |
Well tomorrow is my meeting from hell. When I say my meeting from hell... I mean MY meeting from hell!
I'm now working for a big company and it just oozes corporate culture. So when in Rome...
The day starts out with a 2 hour pre-meeting. I had to coordinate the schedules of 12 people. 8 of us are in Malvern, PA and 4 of us are in Charlotte, NC. Hello video conferencing! After all, why just talk to our long distance co-workers when we can see them too.
After the 2 hour pre-meeting we have the main meeting which is 6 hours long! Damn I must be crazy. Anyway, in addition to the 12 of us, I invited 4 people from SPSS Inc., one of our vendors. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to find an 8 hour block of time that 16 people all are available? Damn near impossible!
That said, here's the gruesome details for the meeting:
- A 3-page meeting agenda
- A full color process-flow diagram with accompanying documentation
- A 12-page technical requirements document
- A metrics reporting requirements document
- 2 sample reports
- A who wants what report document
- A classic continental breakfast
- A caesar salad buffet for lunch
- Otis Spunkmeyer cookies for an afternoon snack
Between the food, my prep work of the above, and the salaries of 16 people for 8 hours, I've spent several thousand dollars of my employer's money already. Then there's my time for postmortem activities (meeting minutes, etc.) and the post-meeting. Boy, when I do something, I do it big don't I?
God I hurt, I'm being molded into one of those corporate types. I shouldn't complain though... the bills are getting paid and I have terrific benefits again. You can't have the good without the bad. |

| The Honeymoon Is Over |
So Michele says to me last night, "How come you haven't updated your blog?"
Simple, because I had nothing to say this past week and nothing has motivated me to say anything.
So how's work? The honeymoon is over... it's just a job now. It puts food on the table and a roof over our head. I'm not crazy about being on the business side, I'm an techno geek after all. One thing I have learned... not all geeks are techno geeks. I'm working with business geeks!
What's a business geek? A business geek gets off on attending meeting after meeting all day long. They thrive on Power Point presentations and project management gant charts. They use the word synergy too many times in one day. God, it's disgusting :-)
So how's home? Same old shit. I wake up, go to work, come home, eat dinner, check my email and read the newspaper (online of course), watch some TV and go to bed. Pretty dull huh?
With the weather getting warmer and the pool opening up, things will liven up a little. The kids will be swimming and there won't be any TV's or computers around. Michele and I will get to spend a little time together for a change. |
