The Solution to High Gas Prices
Over the weekend, as I was paying my bills, I noticed something. I pay two rates for things like electricity and water.

For example, when my electric bill shows 982 KWH, I pay one rate for the first 500 KWH and a higher rate for the remaining 482 KWH. What this means is if I use more electricity because I have inefficient appliances (old AC units, huge refrigerators, too many computers, etc.) I have to pay a premium.

If I want to save money on my electric bill, I can replace the old AC units with newer, more efficient ones. I can buy a more modestly sized refrigerator. I can eliminate some of the unnecessary computers.

Now suppose we do the same for gas. We charge a low rate for the first 10 gallons of a fillup and then charge 50% more for anything over the first 10 gallons. People naturally want to save money so here's what might happen. People driving older vehicles might trade them in for newer more efficient ones and the car owners driving huge SUVs and pickup trucks might trade them in for more modest cars. The people who want to keep their older and/or larger vehicles would have to pay a premium.

Do today's families really need a huge SUV or pickup truck to drive to work, run their kids to school or go shopping? What do you think?

I gotta disagree with you there man. Say you're packing up the kids to go to the beach and your tank is 16 gallons. So gas is $2.50 a gallon and you spend $25.00 for the first 10 gallons and $22.50 for the remaining 6 gallons to ensure you don't run out on the way there? $47.50 for 16 gallons of gas? No way!

What if you need that pick up for work. Not everyone works in an office. Here's a thought. What if they stop "filling up"? They could go to the pumps more frequently and only receive 10 gallons at a time. Just a thought.
