| How Did I Do It? |
I was over at my Aunt Grace's place for a couple of hours yesterday and today. Her computer recently started getting slower & slower, things stopping working like they used to, etc., etc. When this happens I don't even try to figure out what is inhabiting the computer. I format and re-install everything.
Naturally, the fresh install really pepped things up. I also put anti-virus, firewall, anti-ad, and anti-spyware software on. She's set to go now.
The one thing I didn't do is the Windows Updates and the Norton Live Updates. Why you ask... because she has a 56Kbps dialup connection!!! God I've become spoiled. I have a 10Mbps (10,000Kbps) cable connection. Doing updates is nothing because the stuff downloads in a minute or less. When I noticed the download times for the updates were 90 minutes here, 65 minutes there, I said No Way.
Aunt Grace is now taking care of the updates. I figure she should be done sometime late tonight with Microsoft's never ending patches and patches to patches.
The point today... I've forgotten how painful dialup was/is. I take 10Mbps cable modem speeds for granted. I now know first hand just how wonderful high-speed internet access really is. It's worth every penny I pay for it! |

Wow, 10Mbps?? I only have 4Mbps here in the Lone Star State. 10Mbps can't be the standard service, can it??

Chris, 10Mbps is premium service... 7Mbps is standard service. RCN is the cable company.

Friday I had to do an upload for a client over a dial-up connection. YAWN!
Sunday I had to access AOL via dial-up at the store because they don't have broadband there. WOW!
Point is, I don't care what I pay now... it's worth it. I will NEVER be able to go back to dial-up!!!

RCN's standard service is better than Comcast's, though I LOVE my cable modem service and have no complaints. 7 - 10Mbps would be better though!
